Nowadays there is still a lot of debate about the figure of the agent. Many players and parents are confused about what an agent does and about the reality of his work. This big misunderstanding is more than anything due to the way the agents have always worked—an unprofessional way— promising a lot of things that they had absolutely no control over which sometimes went well, and sometimes went wrong.
The main misunderstanding is that the agent finds a team for the player, but most of the time he doesn’t.
So who is an agent, and what should we expect from him?
First of all, the agent is the person who has to read and discuss the contract; he must be very competent in relation to the sports contract and has to be able to protect the athlete very well, thinking also of the long term. Secondly, he must be a skilled negotiator, so as to obtain the maximum for his client.
oWhen it comes to finding a team, the most important thing is that he should be good at putting the right spotlight on the athlete, and above all that he does that at the right time—the timing is a key factor and makes all the difference.
Last but not least, he must be an honest and sincere person, totally directed at doing the best for his client and after all his own interests.
The last piece of advice: relying only on one professional at a time, having so many people following without the right dedication, is the worst way to be managed, because in the end everyone is working but in reality no one is working, and we believe that every athlete should demand the maximum commitment when talking about his future.
